Aggregation and coexistence. I. Theory and analysis

چکیده

1. The aggregation model of coexistence states that intraspecific aggregation over patches stabilizes species coexistence and allows high diversity in patchy systems. The model is reviewed, with emphasis on the methods of analysis of aggregation data. Essential improvements in existing methods of analysis are presented. 2. The density, rather than the number, of competitors is important when patches differ in size. Measures of intraspecific and interspecific aggregation, J and C, are modified to take account of variable patches. The discrete negative binomial distribution is not suitable to quantify crowding on variable patches. 3. A new criterion for coexistence in a patchy environment is developed that is a necessary and sufficient condition for the persistence of a specified species in the presence of other species. A previous criterion, the 'relative strength of intraspecific aggregation', A, represents only a necessary condition for the coexistence of two species. 4. The stability of coexistence is affected by clutch sizes. Existing methods to estimate clutch sizes are not satisfactory. The analyses are most sensitive to errors in the estimated clutch size when clutches are large relative to the number of individuals per patch.

ON THE FUZZY SET THEORY AND AGGREGATION FUNCTIONS: HISTORY AND SOME RECENT ADVANCES

Several fuzzy connectives, including those proposed by Lotfi Zadeh, can be seen as linear extensions of the Boolean connectives from the scale ${0,1}$ into the scale $[0,1]$. We discuss these extensions, in particular, we focus on the dualities arising from the Boolean dualities. These dualities allow to transfer the results from some particular class of extended Boolean functions, e.g., from c...

The witness set of coexistence of quantum effects and its preservers

One of unsolved problems in quantum measurement theory is to characterize coexistence of quantum effects. In this paper, applying positive operator matrix theory, we give a mathematical characterization of the witness set of coexistence of quantum effects and obtain a series of properties of coexistence. We also devote to characterizing bijective morphisms on quantum effects leaving the witness...

Once in a Blue Moon, a Very Rare Coexistence of Glutaric Acidemia Type I and Mucopolysaccharidosis Type IIIB in a Patient

Background: GAI and MPSIIIB are two rare genetic disorders caused by pathogenic variants in two different genes. Here, we report a coexistence of these two different rare disorders in an individual. Methods: A four-year-old Iranian boy born to first-cousin parents suspected to have MPSIIIB and/or GAI was investigated in this study. Targeted genomic enrichment and NGS were used to examine genes ...

An input-oriented radial measure for returns to scale aggregation.

In production theory, it is necessary to be capable of predicting the production func- tion’s long-run behaviors. Hereof, returns to scale is a helpful concept. Returns to scale describes the reaction of a production function to the proportionally scaling all its input variables. In this regard, Data envelopment analysis (DEA) provides a com- prehensive framework for returns to scale evaluation...

Can initial intraspecific spatial aggregation increase multi-year coexistence by creating temporal priority?

Both intraspecific spatial aggregation and temporal priority effects have the potential to increase long-term species coexistence. Theory and models suggest that intraspecific aggregation can facilitate coexistence via limited dispersal or asymmetric interaction distances. During community assembly, intraspecific aggregation may also delay interactions between more and less competitive species,...
